Eye surgery in progress

Georgia Center for Sight is proud to host the best eye doctors in Athens, GA. And Cataract surgery is actually one of the most common procedures they perform. The surgery is typically completed as an outpatient procedure and only takes between 10 to 15 minutes.

Did you know that half of blindness in the world is caused by the improper use of handheld surgical instruments? While our surgeons are highly trained and boast masterful use of all eye surgery equipment, we have begun to implement robotic instruments which provide even more safety to patients.

One of the tools at our disposal is the LenSx® Laser which dramatically improves upon the precision and accuracy of traditional eye surgery equipment. The laser uses femtosecond pulses to create incisions (that’s a millionth of a billionth of a second!)

What makes this laser perfect for eye surgery is the fact that surgeons can program the size, shape and location of each incision with stunning accuracy. This ensures there is virtually no damage to the surrounding tissue. LenSx® has a number of other state-of-the-art features that make cataract surgery easy and safe.

The actual procedure involves removing the cloudy lens and replacing it with an artificial one. The artificial lens (called an IOL) is typically made from a material that is very flexible. This means the surgeon can fold it and insert it through a very small incision. This is one of the methodologies Georgia Center for Sight uses to ensure the most minimally invasive experience.

Patients rarely ever feel anything during the procedure because of topical numbing drops and other medications to help you relax. You will need someone to drive you home, but patients usually resume their normal activities after only 2 to 3 days of recovery.

If you or a loved one are considering laser cataract surgery contact Georgia Center for Sight today to schedule a consultation. Our skilled staff looks forward to helping you in any way we can.
